Romestead Guide
The complete strategy hub for Romestead — the survival town-builder from Beartwigs and Three Friends. Boss walkthroughs, build orders, god offerings, automation chains, co-op roles and a live patch tracker. Built for the players who hit Steam reviews looking for answers.
Beartwigs has dated the first big step of the roadmap: full controller support, "Furniture Mode" removed, over 30 new dungeons and a Challenge Dungeon rework. The catch — you'll need to create a new world to see the new content. Everything confirmed, plus what you keep if you reroll: read our Autumn Update breakdown →

New to Romestead? Start with the big picture
Romestead is a Roman-themed survival town-builder from Beartwigs (published by Three Friends) that launched into Steam Early Access on May 26, 2026. You arrive as a single citizen on a corrupted frontier, rebuild a Roman settlement one building at a time, recruit and manage villagers who each have their own jobs and personality traits, court a pantheon of seven gods for blessings and building unlocks, and push outward through four increasingly hostile biomes toward the game's boss fights. It fuses the base-management of a colony sim with the hands-on combat, gathering, and dungeon-diving of an action survival game — and because it's in active Early Access, the systems and balance shift almost every week.
If you've just picked it up and feel lost, that's completely normal: Romestead explains very little on its own. Most of what trips new players up isn't difficulty — it's the game quietly not telling you that logs won't go in chests, that your carpenter needs a specific toggle flipped before it will build anything, or that your citizens can starve standing right next to a full farm. This page is the orientation the game doesn't give you; the guides linked throughout go deep on each system.
The progression path, boss by boss
Romestead's world is a ring of biomes you open in sequence. Each one introduces a new ore and gear tier, gates a set of buildings, and culminates in a boss whose drops unlock the next stage of progression. Here is the entire current Early-Access arc in one view — the map most new players wish they'd had on day one:
| Stage | Biome | Boss | What clearing it opens | Gear tier |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Plains | Guardian of Minerva (Giant Owl) | Carpenter, Blacksmith, the automation-enabling Logistics Tent, Feathered armor | Wooden → Flint |
| 2 | Forest | — | Lumber and mint; the ramp toward Bronze tools | Copper |
| 3 | Desert | Cyclops | Granite Tooth → Minerva's next quest tier; Tectonic armor; the road to Bronze | Bronze → Iron |
| 4 | Volcanic | Pyzifax, Great Phoenix, Talos Prototype | The endgame — Core Vessel, the Temple, and the top-tier Flamen Volcanalis set | Flamen Volcanalis |
A fifth and sixth biome — a "spooky" region targeted for late summer, then Swamp and Ruined City — are on the roadmap but not yet playable. For the full walkthrough of each region and the survival kit the Volcanic biome demands, see the biomes guide; for the fights themselves and the recommended order, the bosses hub.
The mistakes that stall almost every new player
Romestead's real learning curve isn't combat — it's a dozen unexplained systems that quietly break your settlement. These are the confusions we see stop the most players cold, each with the one-line fix and a link to the full explanation:
| What looks broken | What's actually happening & the fix |
|---|---|
| Logs, stone, ore and clay won't go into chests | Those are carried items, not inventory items — chests reject them. They only fit in Material Storage. Storage system → |
| You placed a building and it never gets built | Your carpenter isn't set to Constructing. A carpenter crafting planks won't erect placements — flip the toggle (or assign a second carpenter). Carpenter guide → |
| Citizens are starving next to a full farm | The food is stranded in the farmer's/baker's building storage, not the communal Food Storage. A Logistics Tent automates the hand-off. Food guide → |
| The Upgrade button on a building is greyed out | It is not a Building Appeal gate — that's the web's most-repeated myth. Upgrades are blocked by resources, a god blessing, or a quest. Appeal explained → |
| You can't find the Cyclops, because it has two names | The game calls the boss “The Eye” and its location the High Temple of the Satyrs — so hunting for a dungeon named “The Eye” gets you nowhere. Follow the map marker. Cyclops guide → |
| Your Watermill won't grind | Its wheel has to sit in water — but it doesn't need a river; a small pond works. Only dry ground fails. Watermill guide → |
| The Blacksmith sits idle with ore inside | You haven't fuelled the external furnace — throw fuel (then ore) into the opening on the outside of the building. Bronze & smelting → |
| Your wheat seeds won't plant | Wheat can only be planted in the Plains biome — the seed tooltip says so, but it's easy to miss. Beginner's guide → |
How the four progression systems interlock
What makes Romestead click — and what most guides never connect — is that four separate progression tracks feed each other. Understanding the loop is the difference between a town that runs itself and one you babysit:
- Biomes & gear gate your reach. Each region's ore unlocks the next armor and weapon tier on the gear ladder, and that gear is the gear-check for the next biome's boss.
- Gods & quests gate your buildings. Almost every structure — Farmstead, Bakery, Watermill, University, the whole Concrete tier — comes from completing an altar quest, not a tech tree. Courting the right god first shapes your whole run.
- Favours & skills gate your character. Skills level by use and pay out Favour Points for a 60+ talent tree — and, uniquely, this progression carries across worlds, so it's never wasted even when a world resets.
- Automation & economy gate your scale. The Logistics Tent wires buildings together and enables repeatable orders, turning manual chains into passive income and freeing you to explore. That's when the money economy really opens up.
The build-order guide sequences all four for the early game so you don't stall; the cards below drill into each system on its own.
What kind of game is Romestead — and is it for you?
Romestead sits at the intersection of two genres that rarely combine well: the colony sim (assign jobs, manage food and traits, plan a base) and the action survival game (you personally gather, fight, and dungeon-dive rather than only directing others). If you liked the base-building of a RimWorld or Bannerlord settlement but wanted to physically be in the world swinging a gladius, this is aimed squarely at you. It plays solo, and it also supports 1–8 player online co-op with scaled difficulty, so it works as a group survival game too. Character death is recoverable — you respawn at your bedroll and your inventory stays on your corpse to retrieve — and there's a softcore option, so it's forgiving enough for newcomers to the genre.
The honest caveat: it's Early Access. Content is substantial but unfinished, balance moves with each patch, and the endgame currently caps at the Volcanic biome. If you prefer a finished, stable experience, it may be worth waiting; if you enjoy growing with a game and don't mind the occasional rough edge, it's in a genuinely playable and rewarding state right now.
Why this guide is different
Romestead launched into a flood of copy-paste guides, many of them AI-generated from the same handful of sources — and several of them are flatly wrong. We work differently: every guide here is grounded in actual play, illustrated with our own in-game screenshots, and we actively correct the errors the other sites keep repeating (the Cyclops location, the Building Appeal myth, and the Watermill-needs-a-river claim above are all cases where the copied consensus is simply incorrect). When we're not fully certain of something — a boss stat we haven't personally reproduced, say — we say so on the page rather than dress a guess up as fact. How we research, test, and verify is laid out on our About page.
Where the game is right now
As of August 2026, Romestead is on the 0.25.2 public beta line (latest numbered patch 0.25.2_5, July 10), and the next milestone finally has a date: the Autumn Update on August 31, 2026. That one is a quality-of-life and content-variety release — full controller support, the removal of "Furniture Mode," over 30 new dungeons and a Challenge Dungeon rework — and it requires a new world to see the new dungeons. It is not the big biome drop: the "spooky" fourth-tier biome, with its own bosses, dungeons and gear tier, is targeted for winter, with the Swamp and Ruined City behind it. Plenty of sites conflate those two; we keep them separate. We track every patch in plain English on our patch tracker and map out what's coming on the roadmap page, so the guides here stay current with a game that's still very much in motion.
Frequently asked questions
How many bosses are in Romestead, and in what order?
Five in the current Early Access build: the Guardian of Minerva (Giant Owl) first, then the Cyclops, then the three Volcanic bosses — Pyzifax, the Great Phoenix of Arabia, and the Talos Prototype. A sixth boss exists in the game's files but isn't playable yet. Full order and difficulty on the bosses hub.
What's the best class or profession to start with?
Your starting class only sets your opening gear and a +5 skill head start — it isn't a locked role, since every character can level every skill. For pure early-game safety, Scholar (ranged) and Mechanicus (construction) rate highest. Full ranking in the class tier list, and character builds in the builds guide.
Can you play Romestead in co-op?
Yes — 1 to 8 players online, plus LAN, with scaled difficulty. See our co-op guide for hosting, roles, and shared-worship tips.
How many biomes does Romestead have?
Four playable now — Plains, Forest, Desert, and Volcanic. The game's data points to six in total, adding a Swamp and a Ruined City, and Beartwigs has separately confirmed an unnamed "spooky" fourth major biome targeted for winter without saying whether it's one of those two. Full breakdown on the roadmap. There is no snow or tundra biome, despite some sites claiming otherwise.
Why won't my carpenter build the things I placed?
Because no carpenter is set to Constructing. A carpenter busy crafting planks won't erect your placements — toggle one to Constructing or assign a second. Full detail in the carpenter guide.
Is Romestead finished, or still being updated?
It's in active Early Access. Development moved from near-daily hotfixes to larger, less frequent releases — the next one is the Autumn Update on August 31, 2026, with the fourth biome targeted for winter. We log them all on the patch tracker.
When is the next Romestead update?
August 31, 2026 — the Autumn Update, confirmed by Beartwigs on August 18. It brings full controller support, removes "Furniture Mode" (hold E to pick items up instead), and adds over 30 new dungeons plus a Challenge Dungeon rework with 70+ new rooms. You'll need to create a new world to see the new dungeons — though your character's skills and Favour Points carry across worlds, so a reroll costs you the settlement, not the character. Full detail on our Autumn Update page.
