Romestead Dungeons Guide

Last updated: 2026-08-23

Dungeons are where Romestead keeps its money, its tech, and most of its best gear — and they're also the part of the game the tutorial says least about. Do they reset? What happens to your inventory when you die three rooms deep? What actually is a Challenge Dungeon? This page answers the questions players keep asking, using the developers' own patch record rather than guesswork — and it's honest about the parts nobody has documented yet.

The three answers most people came here for

Yes, dungeons reset — that's what makes re-running them a repeatable income loop. Dying leaves a gravestone holding your inventory where you fell, marked on your map, and there's a recovery path even when it becomes unreachable. Challenge Dungeons are a separate, harder category in the Plains and Forest, and they're being reworked on August 31.

How this page is sourced

Romestead has no in-game dungeon codex and, as of writing, no wiki page explaining Challenge Dungeons. So most of what follows is reconstructed from Beartwigs' own patch notes (via the official Steam news feed), cross-checked against the game's wiki and our own play. Where something genuinely isn't documented anywhere, we say so rather than inventing a mechanic — there is a lot of confidently-wrong dungeon information circulating.

Why dungeons matter more than they look

It's easy to read dungeons as optional combat content. They aren't. They're load-bearing for three separate systems:

Which is why "the dungeons all feel the same" was one of the loudest community complaints, and why "more varied dungeons" made Beartwigs' top-five development priorities.

Do dungeons reset? (Yes — and how to force it)

This is the single most-asked dungeon question and it has a clear answer, hiding in an unlikely place. When Beartwigs added a fix for inaccessible player graves, their advice to affected players was:

From the official patch notes

"If you can't get to your grave, then reload the world or wait for the dungeon to reset."

That single line confirms two things the game never tells you. Dungeons reset on their own over time, and reloading the world is the manual lever when you don't want to wait.

Practically, this is what turns dungeon-running into a farm rather than a one-off. A cleared dungeon repopulates, so the route you already know — where the traps are, where the chests sit, which rooms are dangerous — becomes a repeatable circuit you can run with far less risk than exploring a fresh one. If you're grinding Denarius or Research Papers, a familiar dungeon on repeat beats a new one every time.

What we can't tell you is the exact reset timer. Beartwigs has never published one and we haven't measured it reliably enough to publish a number we'd stand behind. If you need a reset now, reload the world.

Dying in a dungeon & getting your gear back

Romestead uses a corpse-run model, and dungeons are where it gets complicated. The basics:

  1. You respawn at your bedroll — which is why placing a fresh bedroll before a dungeon expedition is worth the materials. See sleeping & respawn.
  2. Your inventory stays where you died, on a gravestone, with a marker on your map.
  3. You walk back in and collect it. That's the whole loop — nothing is deleted on death.

The complication is when the grave lands somewhere you can't reach: behind a closed puzzle, down a pit, past a door that shut behind you. Beartwigs shipped a set of fixes specifically for this, and they're worth knowing because they're your recovery options:

SituationWhat happens / what to do
Grave is somewhere unreachableThe game will sometimes move it to the start of the dungeon automatically, specifically to stop graves becoming inaccessible.
You still can't reach itReload the world, or wait for the dungeon to reset. This is the studio's own instruction.
The grave was destroyed or lostReload the world and the gravestone is recreated at the world spawn point — note: world spawn, not your bed. Go to where you originally started the world.
Stale or broken grave markers on the mapInvalid grave markers are cleaned up when you connect to a game, so phantom markers should clear themselves.
The one case that isn't recoverable

Beartwigs was explicit that the grave-recreation fix could not be applied retroactively to graves already lost before it shipped. If you lost a grave in the game's first weeks, it's gone — no reload will bring it back. Everything after that fix is recoverable.

Two habits worth building: move your bedroll closer before a serious dungeon run so the corpse walk is short, and don't carry your entire stockpile in. Nothing in Romestead is destroyed on death, but a long round trip through a repopulating dungeon to reach your own body is its own punishment.

Challenge Dungeons

A distinct, harder category of dungeon — and one of the least-documented things in the game. There is currently no wiki page explaining them, so here is what's actually established rather than assumed:

The entrance death-loop is being fixed on August 31

The worst thing about Challenge Dungeons has been respawning into the entrance and being killed immediately, repeatedly, with no way to break the cycle. The Autumn Update explicitly "removes the possibility of being killed by the entrance over and over again" and adds over 70 new rooms. If a Challenge Dungeon has beaten you this way before, it's worth another attempt after the update.

What we deliberately won't tell you is what makes them mechanically "challenge" rather than just harder, or what their reward tier is relative to normal dungeons — we haven't confirmed either, and several sites state it confidently without support. We'll fill this section in properly once the reworked version lands.

What dungeons actually give you

RewardWhy you want it
DenariusThe high-value currency. Dungeon treasure is the fastest source in the game — see the money guide.
Research PapersGate the University and the whole mid-late tech tier. See Research Papers.
Armor piecesArmor is explicitly among the things found in dungeons — a real alternative to crafting every piece. See the gear tier list.
TrinketsThe accessory slot, and enemy-dropped trinkets roll random modifiers — so duplicates aren't wasted.
Quest itemsSeveral god quests hinge on a specific object sitting in a specific dungeon. See the quest index.
Rare scrolls & odditiesSome items only exist down here — the Druid Scroll was literally unobtainable until a patch added the missing droptable that contained it.

Puzzles, traps & the throwing mechanic

Romestead's dungeons are described by the developers as puzzles "filled to the brim with tough enemies," and the puzzle half catches people out more than the combat does.

The mechanic to internalise is throwing. You can pick up rocks, ore, bushes and other loose objects and hurl them — and that isn't only a combat option, it's a puzzle tool. Thrown objects trigger pressure plates from a safe distance and destroy things you can't safely melee. The Talos Prototype fight is the extreme version of this: you break its guardian statues by throwing stones at them.

Traps and hazards are real. The patch record includes fixes for a spike puzzle in the Flamines Volcanalis Foundry that could generate without a valid path across, and for pits in a volcano dungeon that you're supposed to be able to fall into deliberately. Treat an apparent dead end as a puzzle before treating it as a bug — but know that genuine generation bugs have existed, so if something looks truly impassable, reloading the world is a reasonable move.

Before a Volcanic dungeon

The volcanic region needs its own kit regardless of the dungeon: Aloe Salve for fire resistance, Antidote for poison, and an Ember Orchid Lantern for light. Full detail in the biomes guide. Going in without lighting is how people fall into the pits that aren't intended.

Named dungeons you'll be sent to

Most dungeons generate as anonymous locations, but a handful are named and tied to specific content. These are the ones confirmed in the game's own material:

DungeonWhere / what
The EyeDesert. The Cyclops encounter — you'll also see it referred to as the High Temple of the Satyrs. Minerva's divine flame marks it on your map.
Temple of VulcanVolcanic. Home of the Talos Prototype. You can't get in without completing Craftsman's Offering at the entrance — four Iron Rods and a building's resource set.
Medusa's LairDesert. Multiple dungeons contain gorgons, but only one is the quest lair — and it only gets its distinctive map marker once the quest is active. She isn't one of the five listed bosses. Full walkthrough: Medusa's Lair guide.
Flamines Volcanalis FoundryVolcanic. Contains the spike puzzle mentioned above. Ties to the Flamen Volcanalis endgame gear tier.
Cure of RobigusA named dungeon significant enough that an entry bug preventing players getting in warranted its own hotfix line.

The Guardian of Minerva and Pyzifax both have their own set-piece locations too — covered on their individual pages.

Quests that send you underground

Worth knowing before you decide dungeons are optional. Confirmed god quests that require a dungeon trip include:

Full chains and offerings in the quest index and gods guide.

When a chest or drop is missing

Two genuine bugs have affected dungeon rewards, and both have fixes — so "it wasn't there" doesn't always mean "it isn't there."

Both are strong arguments for re-running old dungeons on a current build rather than assuming you've exhausted them.

What changes on August 31

Dungeons are the headline content of the Autumn Update, and it's a bigger change than the patch line suggests:

You need a new world to see any of it

Dungeons are baked in when a world is generated, so Beartwigs states plainly that you are required to create a new world to see the new dungeons and worldgen. Your existing world keeps working and still receives every code-side change — it just won't contain the new layouts. The good news is that your character, skills and Favour Points carry across worlds, so a reroll costs you the settlement, not the character. Full breakdown on our Autumn Update page.

If dungeon repetition is what made you put Romestead down, this is the update to come back for — and we'll rewrite this page with the new layouts once we've explored them.

Common questions

Do dungeons reset in Romestead?

Yes. Beartwigs' own patch notes confirm it — advising players who can't reach a grave to "reload the world or wait for the dungeon to reset." Dungeons repopulate over time, which is what makes re-running cleared ones a repeatable income loop. Reloading the world is the manual way to force it. The exact timer has never been published.

How do I get my stuff back after dying in a dungeon?

You respawn at your bedroll; your inventory stays on a gravestone where you died, marked on your map. Walk back and collect it. If the grave is unreachable the game may move it to the start of the dungeon; failing that, reload the world or wait for the reset. If the grave was destroyed or lost, reloading recreates it at the world spawn point — not at your bed. Graves lost before that fix shipped were not recovered retroactively.

What are Challenge Dungeons?

A separate, harder dungeon category found in the Plains and Forest, with their own chests. Beartwigs reduced their enemy counts slightly at one point, and the Autumn Update reworks them with 70+ new rooms and removes the entrance death-loop. The game explains them poorly and no wiki page documents them in depth — we've stuck to what's actually established.

Why is a dungeon chest missing?

Possibly a bug that's since been fixed — a patch corrected chests sometimes failing to spawn, with the studio advising that if you're missing a quest item you should check again. Separately, some dungeons had missing droptables that were later added, making items like the Druid Scroll obtainable for the first time. Re-run it on a current build.

What do you get from dungeons?

Denarius (the fastest source in the game), Research Papers that gate the University tier, armor pieces, trinkets with random modifiers, rare scrolls, and quest items that several god chains depend on.

Does the Autumn Update add new dungeons?

Yes — over 30 new dungeons plus 70+ new Challenge Dungeon rooms on August 31, 2026, along with worldgen updates. You'll need to create a new world to see them, since dungeons are generated with the world. See the Autumn Update guide.
